Babysitting the first time
Feeling the excitement and nerves around that first babysitting occasion? Don’t worry it will get easier.
You might get a detailed list of instructions from the Parent – even if they are only going to be absent for an hour. Don’t be offended – remember they are still learning how to cope with this new person everyday and figure you have forgotten how too. Take the list, listen as they read it to you, agree to everything, smile and send them on their way. Then once they are gone – read it again, because the moment the baby wakes or needs changing or whatever you need to do it’s the only reference source you have! You don’t want to call them, because would be just too embarrassing. By the third babysitting event chances are there will be no instructions, just the dust left behind in the wake of the Parent(s) departure. Over time you will feel more comfortable about ‘stretching’ the parents’ rules but it’s best to stick to the regime early on if you want to babysit ever again.
Nana Lizzie’s advice – stick to the child’s routine as much as possible at least until they are old enough not to tell on you (either in words or behaviour)!
Baby proofing
If baby is no longer staying in one place, move anything that you really cherish or is dangerous to higher ground; including books, chemicals, breakables.
Once bubs is walking remember to keep knives away from the edge of benches, and saucepan handles turned in. Hot cups of tea and coffee well out of reach – and cartons of eggs! Block off stairways and keep chairs and anything that can be climbed on away from open windows.
Here’s a few ideas on making your home safe for the new baby –
Basic baby supplies to have at your place
- baby wipes
- nappy cream
- spare nappies (note: some Parents will expect organic)
- organic baby food (covers all Parents)
- a towel to change baby on
- for older babies – toys, Nana’s special blanket and towel
- a good night sleep the night before
- a supply of energy (forget about doing anything else!)
