What’s in a (grandparent’s) name?

There is a real dilemma for many an almost Grandmother (or Grandfather) – what should the grandchildren call you?  Becoming a grandmother just seems to confirm you are getting older and there is now proof of it now matter how much you have spent on cosmetics.  Sigh.  Still the choice of a non-grandma type name might just avoid this realisation.  Ok, kid yourself if you want and let the children call you by your first name but when you still have to admit to the sales assistant that, no, they are your grandchildren there is no escaping the fact – you’re a nana.

There are so many versions of grandmother – Granny, Gran, Granma, Grandma, Mama, Memaw, Nana, Nan, Mops, and more!

Grandfathers don’t seem to care quite so much and generally are more amused by the fact that they are now sleeping with a grandmother!  Still there are heaps to choose from.

Pa, Pop, Poppy, Grandad, Gramps, Grumps, Gup, etc

Languages other than English offer a fabulous variety – Oma and Opa (German or Dutch), Nonna and Nonno (Italian), YiaYia and Papu (Greek)

However, it should be expected that the grandchildren might just have there own versions of your choice because they can’t pronounce the name you have chosen or they just don’t think it suits your personality or occupation.  With divorce rates so high it might even be that children now have multiple set of grandparents and referring to step-grandparents who are not blood relatives by nicknames may not be appropriate.

For more ideas on grandparent names, search the internet for “grandparent names” and you will find heaps.
